ABOUT US

Virginia Clinical Therapy Center

Welcome

Assisting clients and families in coping with life challenges through creating a therapeutic and trusting environment and exploring options and solutions.

We at VCTC create a client centered and therapeutic environment that fits for each client. We believe best therapeutic solutions can be identified in a trusting and comfortable environment. During sessions, significant amount of emphasis is placed on developing and achieving client’s vision of solutions for the issues they are facing. Conversations are often centered around what has been tried, what had worked in the past, and what more can be identified.

In resolving family issues, family relationships or behavioral patterns in response to relationships are assessed to identify therapeutic solutions.
Each member of the family plays a role in the family functioning and its processes.

 Psychotherapy & Counseling

Psychotherapy, also known as therapy, is a term that can generally be referred to as the “treatment of mental and emotional disorders through the use of psychological techniques designed to encourage communication of conflicts and insights into problems, with the goal being personality growth and behavior modification”
(American Heritage Dictionary).

Counseling is a specific problem or issue focused brief therapy. In order for psychotherapy to be effective, creating a therapeutic environment is one of the key components.

Positive Behavior Support

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is an approach within Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that places an importance on the individual. PBS identifies common antecedents and environments that are not controlled by the individual, yet make a huge impact on individual's behaviors. Clinicians evaluate ways to manipulate these variables to help individuals learn replacement behaviors.

Peter Whang

LPC,PBSF

I have over 15 years of clinical experience, during which time I have helped individuals and their families facing varying degrees of challenging situations in diverse settings such as Inpatient, Outpatient, Foster Care, Residential Group home, etc. My clinical training began early in my career when I joined Boys Town, a nationally recognized non-profit organization for its scientific and family oriented approach to behavioral issues among children and adolescents.

Based on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Family Systems Therapy Techniques such as Psycho-Education Model, Solution Focused Therapy, and Strategic Family Therapy, I explore solutions and options with clients and their families. I am committed to creating a therapeutic environment for my clients, and I believe therapy can be a life changing experience through a collaborative effort between a clinician and a client. I make efforts in creating a trusting and therapeutic relationship with my clients and advocating for my clients.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Certified Positive Behavior Support Facilitator (PBSF) in VA.
